There’s a lot to wrap your head around in the world of body contouring. With a growing number of options to choose from, it’s important to understand the differences that determine which treatment is right for you.

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that eliminates unwanted fat and helps you sculpt a slimmer, smoother figure. Like Emsculpt NEO, the CoolSculpting system stimulates a natural fat cell removal process that continues for weeks after a treatment. However, it achieves this using a completely different technology.

CoolSculpting, as you may have already guessed by the name, uses freezing technology to destroy excess fat cells. Fat cells are more vulnerable to the cold than other tissues, so CoolSculpting can safely freeze and destroy stubborn fat without harming any surrounding non-fat tissues. A CoolSculpting session takes about 45 minutes to complete.

The key distinction to note here, in addition to the different technologies, is the goal of treatment. CoolSculpting exclusively targets fat. Emsculpt NEO targets fat and muscle. Your consultation is the most important part of the preparation process. During this conversation, we will get to know each other. Beyond that, there’s very little you need to do to prepare for an Emsculpt NEO treatment. Wear comfortable clothing to your appointment and, if you have any piercings in the area to be treated, please remove them before we get started.

Your Emsculpt NEO treatment should be a comfortable and convenient experience. When you arrive at Illuminate Med Spa, we’ll identify the treatment areas and make sure we’re on the same page about your goals. Then you’ll simply lay down and relax while the applicators are placed over your skin and the machine goes to work.

You will feel a gentle warming sensation as the procedure begins. This is the radiofrequency energy raising the temperature in your fat cells and warming up your muscles for the next part of the treatment. For the remainder of the procedure, your attention will likely be focused on the involuntary muscle contractions. They can feel odd at first, but the sensation isn’t painful, and you’ll grow accustomed to it as the treatment progresses.

Your Emsculpt NEO treatment will last about 30 minutes, then you’ll be free to go about your day.

There is no downtime following an Emsculpt NEO treatment. You’ll have no marks on your skin, although you may see some mild and short-lived redness in the treated area. You might also notice that your muscles feel sore and fatigued, just like they do after a workout in the gym. You should be able to jump right back into your daily routine, even same-day exercise if you’re feeling motivated, with no interruptions.

Everyone’s body is different and so are their goals. The typical Emsculpt NEO series starts with four sessions in a two-week period, but some people may require more treatments to reach their desired outcome. The InBody 270 does a full-body scan and provides valuable information on your resting daily calories burned (called the Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR), percentage of fat, percentage of skeletal muscle and total body water. It makes recommendations specific to you for ideal increases or decreases in either fat or muscle. The higher your muscle to fat ratio is, the higher your BMR is, and the more calories you burn even when just sitting around.
